ECRC Goes Panama City Redfishing in the "Boondocks"

The 4th Stop on the Emerald Coast Redfish Club Tournament Trail was out of the small town of West Bay Florida at one of the club's favorite locations…..Boondocks Restaurant which sits on the water at the west end of West Bay.

The day started out with high expectations by all the teams just due to the weather being the best day we have had to fish in an ECRC Tournament this year, and everyone knew we were due a break after the first three tournaments being in very foul weather. During the check in there were a record number of boats/teams entering the event and we finished check in at 33 boats, which sets the record for teams participating in a single ECRC Event. At the numbered start all teams ran to the east and into a beautiful sunrise over West Bay, and we are off.

The tide forecast for Tournament Day was a Neap Tide and all teams had their specific plans as how and where to pursue a pair of slot redfish. There seemed to be a lot of relocating as flats and bay boats were seen most of the morning and early afternoon moving around the bay in their pursuit of the winning pair of redfish. Water in West Bay was slightly stained and showed very little to no movement over the course of the day.
At 3:00pm 25 of the 34 boats returned to the weigh in with fish to weigh and after the long weigh in the weights were sorted and the talent rose to the top of the leader board.

Weighing in a pair with a total weight of 9.89lbs and edging me and my partner out of 7th Place, was Team Future Masters, the ECRC's youngest team of Jordan Smith and Dalton Humphrey. These two are on the way to stardom; remember you saw them here at the ECRC first. Just ahead, were Team "Flying Low", Bob Files and Roger Whitten with a bag that tipped the scales at 9.98lbs, which placed Bob and Roger in 6th Place. The Team of Bobby Weir and Mathew Schoen was the first team in the top 7 to break the double digit weight mark with a very nice pair of slot fish that weighed in at 10.29lbs and landed Bobby and Mathew nicely into 5th Place. Just ahead in 4th Place were the Team of Shawn Mistovich and Justin Hinote with a total weight of 10.99lbs. The top three spots looked like the who's who of the Competitive Redfishing World. 3rd Place was owned by the Top Shelf Team of Fred Myers and Bruce Lindheim with a total weight of 11.24lbs and 2nd Place was held soundly by the Team of Jason Melvin and Jimmy Watson with a bag weighing 11.89lbs. The Top Spot was taken by Team "Always A Contender" partners Ken Cube and Mike Patterson with a remarkable brace of Redfish weighing 11.94lbs.

This Tournament was very remarkable to be a part of in the fact that 25 of 34 boats returned to the dock with fish to weigh on a Neap Tide. Two teams found and caught more than 20 fish and a large number of teams caught numbers in the teens. It seemed the fellowship and interaction between each team was as good as it gets and something that has become a great part of the Emerald Coast Redfish Club. Incredible Event.

Good Light and Clear Water,
